Fourth Time Lucky For Nunn In Queensland by Howard Harding
November 10, 2014 -
After three defeats by her higher-ranked compatriot over the past two
years, Canberra-born Christine Nunn finally got the better of
Queenslander Lisa Camilleri in the final of the Women's Queensland Open
for the first time to claim the second WSA World Tour title of her
career.
Seeded two in the long-established WSA Tour 5 squash event at Northern
Suburbs Squash Centre in Brisbane, 23-year-old Nunn secured her
anticipated place in the final after overcoming Norway's No3 seed Lotte
Eriksen in a four-game semi-final.
Top seed Camilleri, the 31-year-old world No50, took the opening game
and looked on course to progress to her fourth successive win over
Nunn, ranked 12 places lower, since January last year.
But Nunn, now based in Melbourne and coached by 1995 Queensland Open
champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald, regained control of the match to draw level
- before forging ahead to claim her breakthrough 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-4
victory after 42 minutes.
"After a battle this afternoon in some brutally hot and tough
conditions, I finished the winner today, 3/1," Nunn (pictured above
with men's champion Robertino Pezzota) told her Facebook fans later.
"Thanks Lisa for the match! Big thank you to Grant and the team at
Northern Suburbs for yet another great event, already looking forward
to next year.
"Thank you to my personal sponsors: AIS, ASC, OLIVER, RMIT and Kooyong
LTC for your ongoing support. Special thank you to my personal coach,
Sarah Fitz and Rod Eyles for their support over the weekend.
"Stoked to win my 2nd WSA title and hoping to continue the good form next week at the IJM Land Penang Women's Open."
