Mexicans Dominate Quarters In Veracruz by Howard Harding

will be home interest in all of the quarter-finals in the inaugural
Boca Del Rio Veracruz International after victories by four Mexicans in
the opening round of the PSA World Tour Challenger 15 squash event at
Squash Club Boca in Veracruz.
Second seed Arturo Salazar led the home charge with an 11-4, 11-4, 11-6
victory over wild card opponent and fellow Mexican Marco Antonio
Toriz-Caddo.
Arturo's twin brother Cesar Salazar, the highest-ranked unseeded player
in the draw, triumphed in the top half of the draw, beating Frenchman
Fabien Verseille 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 to earn a clash with a French-born
opponent Stephane Galifi, the third seed from Italy.
But Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira will have the toughest battle on his
hands. The unseeded 28-year-old from Mexico City earned his place in
the last eight after his first round opponent Alfredo Avila retired
injured after just one game - but the world No74 will now face top seed
Miguel Angel Rodriguez.
The Colombian, ranked 25 in the world, survived two tie-break games
against Reiko Peter before beating the Swiss qualifier 14-12, 12-10,
11-6.
Former top-ranked Mexican Eric Galvez took just 28 minutes to secure
his place in the quarter-finals. The 27-year-old former world No33 beat
fellow countryman Gerardo de Paul Garcia, a qualifier, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5
- and will now take on Canada's No4 seed Shawn Delierre for a place in
the semi-finals.
