Squash Canada Announces Pan Am Championships Line-Ups

July 22, 2014 - Ottawa (ON) - Squash Canada announced today its team for the Pan American Squash Championships which are taking place in Toluca, Mexico from September 7 – 13, 2014.  The 2014 Pan American Championships will be run as a part of the Pan American Sports Festival, with Squash Canada’s athletes competing in singles, doubles, mixed and team competitions.  The Championships will also serve as the qualification and seeding event for the 2015 Pan Am Games which are slated for Toronto.

The Women’s Canadian Team is comprised of: 

Samantha Cornett, of Deep River, ON – Canada’s #1 player ranked #30 in the World on the Women’s Squash Association Professional Rankings.  Cornett reached the Round of 16 at the WSA World Singles Championships earlier this year and recently won her second consecutive Canadian National Singles Open Title.

Hollie Naughton, of Oakville, ON – Holding a #4 spot in the Canadian Rankings, Naughton recently finished with a bronze medal at the 2014 Canadian Squash Championships. At a young age of 19, she is the youngest athlete on the Canadian National Team. Last summer, Naughton captured the Pan American Jr Championship and lead Team Canada to 5th place at the World Junior Women’s Team Championships.

Nikole Todd of Regina, SK – The 24 year old is currently ranked #3 in Canada and is coming off a very successful start in 2014. She took 5th place at the 2014 Canadian Squash Championships and finished in the top 8 at the Montreal Open. Todd was also part of Team Saskatchewan who won old at the 2014 Canadian Women’s Team Championships.

Danielle Letourneau of Calgary, AB – making her debut on Team Canada’s Senior National Team., Danielle is ranked in the Top 8 in the College Squash Association in the United States and captain of the Cornell University Squash Team.  At the 2014 Canadian Squash Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Letourneau reached the finals of the Women’s Open division losing to Samantha Cornett in 3-1 in the final. 

The Men’s Canadian Team is comprised of: 

Shahier Razik of Toronto, ON – Currently ranked #2 in Canada; Shahier took home the title at the 2014 Canadian Squash Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, his 7th Canadian Championship. From 2009 to 2012 Razik won 4 straight Canadian National Championships to add to his titles in 2006 and 2007. He was formerly ranked Top 20 in the PSA World rankings and was a Pan-Am Games gold medalist in 2003.

Shawn Delierre of Montreal, QC – Shawn recently won his 13th Career World PSA Title with an upset win over top seeded Andrew Shoukry in the final of the Tour de las Americas Paraguay. Delierre is currently holding Canada’s #1 Rank and #50 in the World. He achieved a career high ranking of #35 in the world in 2013, and is competing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Andrew Schnell of Calgary, AB – Schnell came out of the 2014 Canadian Championships with a silver medal, his best finish nationally. He holds the #3 Canadian Ranking and is Top 100 in the PSA World rankings.  Schnell has represented Canada at two World Team Championships in 2011 and 2013, and was a member of the silver medalist Canadian team at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara.

Graeme Schnell of Calgary, AB – this will be the older Schnell brother’s second straight year representing Canada at the Pan American Championships, having competed in Argentina in 2013. He is a five-time Canadian University Champion and three-time gold medalist with Team Alberta at the Canadian Men’s Team Championships.

The team will be led by Canadian coach Graeme Williams from the Windsor Squash Racquet Club.
