NY Squash Retains War of 1812 Trophy in Close Finale
by Andy Garr

September 14, 2015. After a well fought, but decisive victory by an Apawamis team on the 13th, The Royal Army team need a victory in the final match against the Union League Club (ULC). In an exciting finish, which went down to the penultimate match, the Brits needing that win and another where they led, lost, and thus the match was halved. This resulted in three wins for NYSquash, two for the Royal Army and two draws. The two halved matches would have resulted in a split had they been settled by games won which was not contemplated in the rules.

After the ULC match, the players and a standing room crowd if dignitaries attended the awards ceremony at ULC where camaraderie prevailed and even the senile New York coordinator was applauded.

Again the British invited a New York team to England to continue the rivalry there next year. The NYSquash president said that this would be discussed at a future meeting.

The temporary trophy will be retained in New York pending a future match of the completion of the permanent trophy designed by Tiffany, which awaits the completion of the $500,000 subscription campaign. The present total raised is now close to $650.

The British captain was effusive in his praise of the hospitality
of the various New York clubs. He said that all who participated considered it a career highlight. It must be noted that the Brits served as part of the honor guard at the 9/11 ceremony at Ground Zero on Friday before the evening match with Apawamis. Peter Briggs of Apawamis organized a beautiful ceremonial introduction to the match, which was appropriate for a major sporting event held on such a solemn day.
